Ice Tray Hacks For Summer & Beyond

Ice Cube Trays can get a bad rap. People think they just lay around, chill out, and make ice-cold cocktails for a living. Yes, these acts do constitute their daily activities, but they can be W-A-A-A-A-Y more than just a “chill” time in a glass. The Vremi team is here to elevate your summer “cool” factor by exploring a few of our favorite ice tray hacks. Try using our “Straight Chillin’ Ice Cube Tray” for a basic cube concoction or go bigger and better with the help of our “Ice Cube and Dr. Tray Set.”

1.  Coffee Cubes

Making coffee cubes is easy. All you have to do is brew the coffee, let it cool, and pour into the trays. Keep in mind, if you wish for sweeter, creamier cubes, add your additional ingredients when the coffee is hot, then proceed normally. With every sip of coffee, chocolate milk, or even a milkshake, throw in some cubes and get an extra jolt of coffee and cream.

2.  Dishwasher Cubes

Okay, yes, we know dishwasher pods are not exactly “cubes” meant for a cocktail or drink, but we had to share the hack! Here’s what you’ll need—½  cup of Borax, ½ cup of washing soda, ½ cup of Epsom salts, 1 tbs of citric acid, 1 tbs of baking soda, 2 tbs of vinegar, and 2 teaspoons of citrus essential oil. First, combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Then, pour in the essential oil and stir until the color is spread evenly throughout. Gradually (very gradually) add the vinegar to the mix. Next, begin to firmly press the mix into the trays. Allow the dishwasher pods to rest for 24 hours before removing and wapow—you’ve got 21 homemade dishwasher pods (or cubes) at your service.

3. Oil Herb Cubes

Searching for the culinary secret to flavor town? Search no more as the herb-infused cubes are the solution to your troubles. Begin by selecting your herbs. Chop up some delicious rosemary, thyme, basil, or parsley and place them into your tray. Next, melt butter (measurements vary depending on preference) and pour it over the herbs. The last step—fill the trays with olive oil or a broth of your choice, then pop them in the freezer. When you’re ready to cook, throw the cubes into a heated pan, melt and voila!

4.  Sauce Cubes

Don’t know what to do with last night’s leftover pasta sauce? Oh the pasta-bilities! Once you devour your pasta dinner and the remaining sauce has cooled, pour it into the trays, place it in the freezer and save it for a rainy day. Next week, when you’re hungry, in a hurry, or both, pop the cubes into a pan with olive oil. Add salt, pepper, spices, and pour over any pasta or dinner dish.

5. Citrus Zest Cubes

Simplicity is key. What’s better than a cold glass of water infused with the flavors of lemon and lime? Absolutely nothing. All you have to do is gather the zest of your favorite citrus fruits; lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc., then, fill the trays with water and sprinkle with the zest. Put the cubes in the freezer and allow them to solidify. When you’re ready for a cool glass of water, pop in the cubes and enjoy.

 Is Tequila The New Kombucha?

An inquiry of the spring and summer season—is tequila really the new Kombucha? Are these wise words a question or a statement and is it worth discussing? The answer is, yes, it most certainly is. Here, we’ll explore the sipping logistics of taste, culture, health benefits, refreshment factor, and gag reflex induced by each.

1.  Taste

How do we begin to describe the taste of a Kombucha drink? Fermented and funky, and has fanatics flocking. But with every fan comes a hater—it’s an acquired taste and we get that, but so is tequila—except you acquire ‘quila in a shot glass with its close friends, lime and salt. The three amigos that’ll always be there for you, no judgments or questions to follow.

2.  The Community

Kombucha has a vast fan base with both the experienced fermentation drinkers and novice newbies. All of which however, seem enthused to educate others about its mysterious floating powders and colorful appeal. And same with tequila! We all know a margarita is that drink no friend ever turns down.

3. Health Benefits

Kombucha’s meant to make you feel better both inside and out. It’s rich in probiotics to aid digestion, improve liver function, and enhance mental health. We’ll give Kombucha that—it makes you feel good, but hey, so does tequila! It’s led to many cleanses—whether it’s pre-consumption or post—’quila has good intentions and doesn’t necessarily mean “to-kill-ya.”

Keep in mind, tequila is a digestive aid, prebiotic (a plant fiber that nourishes the good bacteria in the colon), promotes weight loss (agavins, a sugar in tequila, help to increase weight loss), and cuts the risk of dementia, osteoporosis, and a whole lot more. Shots out for tequila!

4.  Refreshment Factor

Kombucha is super popular in the summer, but so is tequila! Kombucha is good, but does it cool you off like an ice-cold Paloma? I think not. Both are delicious during the summer heat, but when you bring tequila to a barbecue, nobody makes a weird face. And remember, the way you drink tequila matters. José Cuervo is 42% corn syrup—it may make a sweeter cocktail, but you’ll meet your hangover in the morning.

5. Both Made Me Throw Up Last Week

There have been the travesties of both Kombucha and tequila—from those who can’t take the taste to those who simply “overindulge.” Indeed, mishaps have occurred from both, but let us tell you, only one of these libations will make you a dancing champion and instantly transform '“turn down” into “turn up.” Here’s our tip: drink blanco or silver tequila, both of which have less sugar—they’re clean tequilas and you’ll be hangover-free (kinda). If you choose to drink José Cuervo, go ahead, but just remember, we warned you.

So, tequila over Kombucha? Drinker’s choice.
